Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about setting up a Cyprus company

Is Cyprus a good place to set up a company?
Yes. Cyprus offers one of the lowest corporate tax rates in the EU at 15%, a mature legal system based on English common law, non-dom tax status for qualifying residents, and a strategic location between Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. It is particularly popular with tech founders, freelancers, and international holding structures.
What is the corporation tax rate in Cyprus?
Cyprus corporation tax is 15% (as updated in 2026, up from 12.5%). Companies benefiting from the IP Box regime pay an effective rate of just 3% on qualifying intellectual property income. There is no withholding tax on dividends paid to non-domiciled shareholders.
What is Non-Dom status in Cyprus?
Non-domiciled (Non-Dom) status exempts Cyprus tax residents from paying Special Defence Contribution (SDC) on dividends and passive income. To qualify you must spend more than 183 days per year in Cyprus and not have been a Cyprus tax resident for more than 17 of the last 20 years. Non-Dom status typically lasts for 17 years.
Do I need a local accountant to run a Cyprus company?
Yes. Cyprus companies must file audited annual accounts with the Tax Department and the Registrar of Companies. By law, the audit must be performed by an ICPAC-registered auditor. A local accountant also handles VAT registration, payroll, and ongoing compliance — which is why finding the right firm is essential.
How long does it take to incorporate a Cyprus company?
A standard Cyprus Ltd can be incorporated in 5–10 business days through a company formation agent. Expedited services can reduce this to 2–3 days for an additional fee. You will need a registered address, at least one director, and a secretary (which your formation agent typically provides).
What is GESY and how does it affect me as a business owner?
GESY is the Cyprus General Healthcare System (public health insurance). As a Cyprus tax resident, you pay 2.65% GESY on dividends received (uncapped). As a director-employee, you and your company each pay a percentage on salary up to a ceiling. Use our free GESY calculator to estimate your contributions.
